First of all, this is a tutorial for the 3DS Version.

1. Get your sprite. It's located in "romfs/Model. It's a .szs file.
2. Open the file in Ohana3ds rebirth and export the .bch.
3 Create a new folder (I did it on my desktop).
4. Start ohana3ds (not rebirth) and open the .bch file.
5. export all the textures into the new folder you created.
6 Edit them. Every image is a frame of the animation.
7. If you are finished, import the new images into the opened .bch in ohana3ds and save.
8. Download 3DS SZS Packer 1.1.
9. Start it.
10. The filename has to be the same as that one you replace.
11."SZS save loc" is the output location. I selected my desktop.
12."SZS source folder" is the folder, that contains the edited .bch.
13.Press "Pack SZS" and it should be compressed as .szs.
14 Copy it into "romfs/Model" and overwrite the original. It should work.

My result:

I edited the SMB1 mario sprite.

EDIT AGAIN: This method doesn't work.

Even if you set all of the paths and names correctly, the edited .szs file will not load in-game.

When you load the .szs into Ohana Rebirth, the file contained in it is Output.bch

When you're done editing it in the original Ohana and use SZSPacker to reinsert the bch, if you open the szs in Rebirth the new filename inside is now file_0000.bch instead of Output.bch

I'm not sure if that's the reason why it won't load in-game, but following this tutorial didn't work for me.

The only things I managed to change in-game were editing the ground and some other tiles using Kukkii for the .ctpk TileData textures, and replacing .bcstm music files.

Did you really have to post that in three different threads.

Wait, do the steps on the first post of this page not work for you?
Old 3DS XL info:
I used to have a 3DSafe A9LH V11.3.0-36U with Luma in my CTRNAND. Since ReiNAND Reibooted and Re-Reileased, I "switch"ed back.
Right now, I have boot9strap with Luma 8.0 as my CFW. Though, I'd like to see other CFW's for B9S.

What about offline? Also, does the mod work on the title screen?

You can also use EveryFileExplorer for extracting the szs and then editing it with Ohana Rebirth that's what I do and did when I made Luigi Maker 3DS

It depends: in the 3DS version the only editable sprites are mario's and bowser's
